Strong Golden AleTasting NotesBelgian golden ales are strong, golden in color, full of fruit, and somewhat hoppy, with low hop flavor and aroma. Usually they are very effervescent. References to the devil are often a trademark of these beers. IngredientsStrong golden ale is brewed using two-row summer malted barley. The primary hop varieties used for this style are Saaz and Styrian Goldings. Brewing TechniquesDuvel is by far the best known of the strong golden ales. During boiling, hops are added three different times, and dextrose is added before primary fermentation to increase the beer's alcohol content and attenuation. Primary fermentation lasts from 5 to 6 days at temperatures between 16 and 27ºC. This is followed by secondary fermentation for approximately 3 days, during which the temperature is gradually lowered to -1ºC.
