Indian Pale AleTasting NotesIndian Pale Ale (IPA) was traditionally a high-gravity, heavily hopped beer brewed for export to India. Today, Indian Pale Ale is a stronger variant of ordinary pale ale, but is usually hoppier, with a slightly higher final gravity than most pale ales. IngredientsTraditionally, East Kent Goldings and Fuggle were used for Indian pale ales, which resulted in a smooth, rounded flavor. The hops were usually added to the cask (dry hopping) before shipping. Many U.S. brewers use Chinook, Galena, Brewers Gold, and Centennial for bittering and use Tettnanger, East Kent Goldings, Cascade, or Fuggle for aroma enhancement. Calcium and sulfates ions found in the water are some of the reasons for IPA's success. The information on this page was provided by beer-brewing.com (http://www.beer-brewing.com). |
